Update on Drouzin Le Mont Ski Resort

Many will be aware that political wrangling resulted in Drouzin Le Mont Ski resort being closed last season (December 2012 to April 2013) and there has been real concern about the possible permanent closure. Well there is some good news: The local council will open the nursery area for the 2013/14 season.

The two lifts immediately opposite the apartments (Teleski du Col & Teleski la Joux) will definitely be running, although we are still waiting for confirmation of when the lifts will open and close for the season.

There is also consideration being given to developing a infant play area that will include a tobogganing and tubing area: see link for more details and photos of possibilities. http://www.lebiot.fr/IMG/pdf/projet_col_du_corbier_2013_pdf.pdf

The Le Biot Mayor’s office has confirmed the “go ahead” for a new development at Drouzin le Mont containing a restaurant, shop, bar, locker room and toilets. Work is scheduled to start in September 2013 and  is likely to be completed for the 2014/15 ski-season.

It will replace the current ticket office and toilet block and is the first phase  of “Montagne Douce” (Translate Sweet or Fresh Mountain) which redevelops the resort gradually.

Just a short update on what is happening with Drouzin le Mont Ski resort: The current operator has decided to give up the lease (which is surprising as he has spent a lot of money expanding, modernising and renovating over the last 3 years) and there are several groups wanting to take it over. The not so good news is that the local council of Le Biot seems to have first refusal and like all politicians world wide, they go for short term options and even then they can not make up their mind.

There has been numerous meetings and although no one has seen anything in writing, the word is that the local council will operate the 3 drag lifts for the lower part of the resort this season. Not sure when the season will start or finish (but one assumes it will be the traditional Christmas week start – Saturday 22nd December 12 and end the last week of March 2013). See below for what ski area is likely to look like,  click to get full size version:

For those of us that are familiar with the resort; having the 3 drag lifts (Teleski La Jour, du Col and La Frasse) open gives access to the recently expanded and renovated beginner/ easy intermediate ski area. (Le Col, Grand Pont, Petit Pont, La Jour, La Fasse and the variations off these runs.)

For those snow-hounds looking for something a little more challenging and who are prepared to walk from the top of Teleski du Col up Le Cherveuil for about 15 – 20 minutes: you will almost certainly be rewarded with virtually untouched power at red and black levels. Try your luck on the top of La Muret (K) and connect with the La Frasse to return to the lift. La Chamois will give intermediate skiers a longer red run for their money and Le Lievre is a short but exciting black run – all your our doorstep.

Please note while we have published this article is good faith,  we do not have control over the local council or what actually happens; we will be updating our website as soon as we get any further news.

If you have been following our articles over the last couple of years you will know all about the improvements to Drouzin le Mont Ski Resort. Well all the improvements has resulted in the resort having to produce an updated piste map, which now shows all 20 pistes and the new snow cannons.

For anyone not familiar with Drouzin le Mont. It is a family friendly independent resort 20 minutes from Morzine and the Portes du Soleil. It sits on the Col du Corbier at an altitude of 1230 to 1650 meters. There are 8 skilifts : 2 chairlifts, 4 draglifts, 2 snow-wires and 20 Pistes : 5 greens, 6 blues, 8 reds, 1 black.

A high resolution copy of this piste map for Drouzin le Mont is available by clicking on map.

With the first snow now falling heavingly over Drouzin le Mont, we thought we give you a quick update about the improvements at this family friendly ski resort.

There has been extensive renovation of the lower ski pistes and nursery area this summer, building on the work done last summer 2010; This in effect improves accessibility to the Telesiege Drouzin (the main chair to half way station) and better access for beginners to the Frasse piste area; Beginners who do not feel ready to go to the mid-station directly from the nursery area will enjoy these runs through the woods as they provide the opportunity to increase the distance while having easy access back to the nursery area or up to the mid-station.

8 additional snowcannons on the lower part of Myritles and Violette have been installed.

A mid point exit has been created from the Teleski Lajoux (beginners drag-lift on the Nursery). This means that beginners who fall off the lift now have very easy access back to the nursery slope.

And a major overhaul of the Teleski le Muret drag lift.

This will all contribute to a great ski experience for the family this winter.

Have a great ski season.

Jeu-de-boules at Drouzin le MontFor those avid followers and players of the French game of bowls, you can now enjoy the new jeu-de-boules court and picnic area besides the tennis court on the Col Du Corbier. The use of the jeu-de-boules court is free, no booking is required; although some evenings you may have to wait, fortunately, benches and picnic tables are also provided.

For those not yet familiar with jeu-de-boules, it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet others and while away an evening in this family friendly resort. Drouzin Le Mont is a Ski resort in the winter, so the tennis and jeu-de-boules courts are usually closed from mid December to end of April.

Jeu-de-boules is also known as Petanque.

In short: Better piste connectivity creating greater variety of routes/ circuits with easier access back to the nursery area and apartments.

For those of you that are regular visitors to Drouzin Le Mont ski Resort – perched on the Col du Corbier between Morzine and Chatel –  will know that last year more snow cannons were installed on the lower slopes and a hands free ski pass system was introduced.

Improvements have continued with better piste connectivity and a greater variety of routes; in fact creating two figure of eight circuits, one blue and the other red.

A previously little used piste, connecting from the top of the Teleski du Col / Violette run to the bottom of Teleski La Frasse and then the bottom of Teleski Le Muret / Cheveuil run (dark blue line on the piste map), has been renovated. This piste now gives good beginners and basic intermediate skiers some great practice runs with the option to very easily pick up the main chair lift to the middle station or the Teleski La Frasse lift for use of the Frasse, a short and enjoyable blue run.

The other development is the re-sloping of a short section of the green run. This will make the section of the green run from the top of the first chair lift (the Telesiege Drouzin) steeper and remove the short almost flat section (marked as a red box on piste map); this will give easier access to the black run (Lys) and red runs (Chamois and Lievre).

These developments will give those of us that need to be back at the nursery area or apartments within a relatively short time and those younger snow hounds that have to check in with their elders, the opportunity to make the most of ski time and to spend some quality time together enjoying the whole of Drouzin Le Mont resort and the Col du Corbier.

For more details, explanations, improvements and developments of pistes at Drouzin Le Mont; please see the piste map and directions below. I have used the full piste names rather than just the piste letters. Please see the amended index.

Combined, the renovated piste and the re-sloping at Drouzin le Mont provide a fine blue circuit: starting from the top of the second chair lift (the Telesiege des Carres) down either blue run (Abondance or Droline) via the green piste and the blue (Marmotte) down to the top of the Teleski du Col, along the renovated blue to the bottom of Teleski La Frasse up the Frasse draglift and back down to the bottom chair lift (Telesiege Drouzin) at the bottom of the nursery area.

The level of challenge can be increased by taking the reds down (Carres, Lievre and Chamoise) or even the black (Lys) and instead of stopping at the bottom of the Teleski La Frasse, to carry on down to the bottom of Cheveuil and the Teleski Le Muret

Love Skiing and Horse Riding? Can’t or don’t want to choose between them? Then you will love Ski-Joering! I saw it for the first time just before Christmas when it came to the family friendly ski resort of Drouzin Le Mont here in the Haute Savoie.

ski-joering in the Portes du Soleil, Haute SavoieWhilst the free taster sessions were mostly taken by adventurous children, you can take ski-joering up to completion level.  An ancient means of transport through out Scandinavia, it was introduced to France as a means of accessing ski areas and is now a recognised leisure sport with competitions in the Haute Savoie and beyond.

All you need is basic skis and boots (and warm clothing, gloves and hat) and you can be off along the snow-covered lanes and forest tracks. Steering and control of the horse is easy using the ridged harness and reins. You can even have two people ski-joering behind the same horse.

For those of you how do not know the area; Drouzin Le Mont independent ski resort is about an hours drive from Geneva with easy access to the Portes du Soleil.  Drouzin Le Mont is ideally suited to novice, beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as families with younger children.

Drouzin le Mont independent ski resort has not only increased its snowmaking capacity by installing an additional 8 snow cannons this year, it has also invested in a new high tech ticketing system which includes ‘Hands-free’ lift-passes.

The ‘Hands-free’ lift pass system scans your pass and lets you through the turnstile without you having to take your gloves off, find your pass and then put it in to the slot. It means warm hands, less queuing and more time skiing.

PS. Remember Drouzin le Mont opens on 19th December 2009 for the season and the lift passes are exceptional value compared to the standard day adult lift-pass price for the Portes du Soleil. (which is almost 2.5 times as much).

Lift passes:

1 day children 14.5 €
6 days children 83 €
1 day adult 16.5 €
6 days adult 87€

Season adult 150 €
Season children 110 €

Remember: Children under 5 years old and over 70 years ski free!

Installing snow cannons at ski resort Drouzin le Mont

Installing snow cannons at ski resort Drouzin le Mont

As you know Drouzin le Mont is a family friendly ski resort between Morzine and Chatel, Hautes Savoie, and only an hours drive from Geneva. What you probably won’t know is that there are eight new snow cannons installed ready for the coming winter season.

These new snow cannons at Drouzin le Mont mean that the snow creating capabilities at the resort have been doubled, all the main runs and nursery area will be maintained in better condition and piste closures will be significantly reduced during periods of low snow fall. This all adds to what was already a super resort for families and beginners as well as those more experienced skier looking for more relaxed un-crowded slopes.

The snow cannons are on the lower section of Chervreuil (red run), on Frasse (blue run) and the connecting run from the bottom of the Telesiege Drouzin to the top of Teleski La Frasse. These are left of the nursery area that you overlook from the apartments and chalets.

Check out the area where the new snow cannons are going to be  (you can enlarge the map twice, by clicking each map once – use the back button to return to the webpage):
